Large-format Fine Art printing up to 1.90 m

Some works need more width than a fine art printer usually offers. For these formats we print on our Mimaki: paper widths of up to 1.90 m, from the roll.

A textile printer that prints on fine art paper

The Mimaki is a textile printer by design. We converted it ourselves for printing on fine art paper. In this form the machine is not commercially available; it is one of a kind.

The conversion was possible because of our many years of experience in printing art. Knowing a printing system in every detail over many years makes it possible to adapt it to your own requirements instead of depending on what manufacturers offer.

Inks and papers

The Mimaki prints with eight pigment inks.

At this width, the choice of fine art papers is smaller than for standard formats. For the Mimaki we currently stock five different papers from Canson and Ilford.

We print from the roll. Narrower formats are printed on the Epson.

Permanence

Pigment ink contains solid color particles that settle on and in the paper surface. Pigment prints are therefore considerably more lightfast than prints made with dye ink.

For the ink in our Mimaki, the ink manufacturer cites up to 200 years for color prints and up to 400 years for black-and-white prints. These are projections based on accelerated aging. They apply to specific papers and to display indoors behind glass. Paper, light, humidity and framing change the result.

Color management

The same color specifications apply to the Mimaki as to our Epson. We create a dedicated ICC profile for each paper batch. Our tolerance is a maximum of 2.5 ΔE; our target is an average ΔE below 1. If you would like to read more about ΔE and color management, our article on the Lab color space is a good place to start.

We measure the finished print with a measuring device. For reproductions, we also compare it with the original under a standard illuminant. When we print an edition, we take sample measurements and assess the print run under a standard illuminant.

What we use the Mimaki for

  • Wall-sized reproductions
  • Large-format editions
  • Oversized exhibition prints

We print formats up to 160 cm wide on our Epson SureColor SC-P20000. The Mimaki is used when an image calls for more width. Scanning, image editing and printing all stay in one studio.
