Art at the Federal President’s Official Residence

From June 13 to 28, 2026, Bellevue Palace will open its doors for an exhibition unlike any that has come before: FREIRAUM KUNST, curated by the Academy of Arts, with free admission. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who has assumed patronage of the event, will then vacate the palace in preparation for the upcoming renovation work. A final public gesture—featuring works by Rosa Barba, Monica Bonvicini, Katharina Grosse, Wolfgang Tillmans, and many others.

One of the artists is Christian Awe.

The Roof installation

Awe isn’t just exhibiting works in one of the castle’s interior rooms. He’s transforming the roof—a large-scale work that hangs above the Federal President’s official residence, visible to everyone. This is the first time an artistic intervention of this scale has been created at this symbolic location in Germany.

The work bears the exhibition’s theme: “Freiraum Kunst.”

Our Work: From Scan to Print File

Reproducing large-format art with such precision that it can be enlarged to monumental proportions without losing quality—that is no small feat.

Christian Awe had his original digitized by us. The contactless CRUSE scan captured the painting in the highest resolution, with accurate color reproduction and meticulous detail. The print file generated from this scan serves as the technical basis for the canvas that can now be seen on the roof of Bellevue Palace.

The CRUSE scanner we use at recom art care can scan formats up to 150 × 250 cm—contact-free, with controlled lighting and minimal UV exposure. The original remains untouched. The result is a master file suitable for any output size.

Why Scan Quality Is Crucial for Large-Format Scans

A tarp on a roof is viewed from a great distance — but also up close. The color accuracy and level of detail in the scan determine whether the work makes an impact or not. Every round of corrections costs time and money. That’s not an option for tightly budgeted projects — and in line with our motto, “Do it once. Do it right.”

The quality of the scan is not the final product—it is the prerequisite for the success of the final product.
